Audio: What song do you listen to when you are sad?
Submitted by Nat.
I'm gonna make a list, since there are a lot. I almost started this list as just a list of sad songs, but now that I look at the questions again, here's what I realize. There are two reasons to listen to songs when I am sad: either to make me happy or to let me wallow in my depression.
Let's start with wallowing:
Andrew Bird - Measuring Cups - The reasoning is more complicated than just the fact that it isn't the happiest song. Andrew Bird reminds me of the greatest time of my life, which is coming up on its one year anniversary in a few weeks. Mid-February 2006 was amazing. Rocio and I were doing great, money was okay, and we got to go on the best trip we've ever taken together. The problem is that shortly thereafter, within months, everything ended. So, unfortunately, when I listen to Andrew Bird, I have to either block that out, or I just live with it
John Cale/Rufus Wainwright/Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah - What a song. This song is downright sad, but it makes so much sense to listen to it when in a wallowing mood. This is not to mention the fact that it was sad in Shrek when this song was played. Damn ogre.
The Shins - New Slang - Just listen to this song and you'll understand. It just has a very "downish" tone to it. Not to mention the lyrics, which include one of my recent favorite lyrics: "I'm looking in on the good life I might be doomed to never find". God, I am so emo.
The Fray - Over My Head (Cable Car) AND How To Save a Life - A double whammy from The Fray. Both of these songs are kinda sad, and they certainly described my feelings back in July and August.
I'm gonna move on to the other list. The songs that I put on to make me happy, when I'm in the mood to get happy. :-)
Dave Matthews Band - Song that Jane Likes - This song is the only song that can make me smile, absolutely no matter what. It is not just upbeat, but everything about it makes me want to smile the biggest smile in my life, ever :-) Well, there have been a few times when it hasn't made me smile. But for the most part, I should say, it does. Even if it's just for a moment. :-D
The Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) - I wrote about this song earlier, but I still enjoy it very much. :-D
Journey - Don't Stop Believing - The first time I ever do karaoke, it's going to be to this song. I can hit the notes, and I just love it. I have it playing right now, and I am so tempted to sing aloud right here. :-)
So, there is my list. There are so many more, but I didn't want to overwhelm. :-)
