In case you, the reader, hasn't heard, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock died in a car accident last week. He hit the back of a parked tow truck that had it's lights flashing. This prompted some to think that he may have fallen asleep or something.
Turns out, according to the police that he wasn't sleeping at all.

He was going 68 in a 55mph zone.
He had a Blood Alcohol Content of 0.157, nearly double the 0.08 legal limit.
He also had marijuana and a pipe in the car, although the toxicology results haven't come back yet, so we don't know if that was in his system.
He wasn't wearing a seatbelt, although the police believe he would have died either way, based on the impact.
And he was on his cell phone, which although not illegal there, still slows reaction times and whatnot.
It reminds me of an episode of King of Queens where they were on an airplane and the flight attendant announces that it was time to fasten seatbelts, put tray table up, and stop using any electronics devices. Doug was un-seatbelted, tray down, and listening to an iPod while playing a Gameboy. Carrie says to him "We're almost landing and you couldn't have any more that you have to do".
This doesn't mean that Hancock should have died. Not at all. But it's kinda sad that this is what people will remember about his death. And lots of people will probably only remember this about him. Very few players die while active, especially during the season. It's still a terrible thing.
Anyway, I just wanted to post about that.
